Become a Volunteer Firefighter

Don't let your free time and unused talents go to waste- volunteer as a member of the Momence Fire Protection District! Our department operates 100% on volunteer, paid-on-call members who are dedicated to serving the community in which they live. 

Being a firefighter isn't just about running into burning buildings; we offer a number of opportunities for interested individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and skill-sets. If you aren't sure that the fire service is the place for you, why not at least give it a try?

Requirements for Employment

As representatives of the Momence Fire Protection District, volunteer firefighters are held to high standards in their personal and professional lives. Please review the following criteria to ensure that you qualify.

Background Check

One of the first steps in becoming a member of the Momence Fire Protection District is to undergo a third-party background investigation. Individuals who have been convicted of felonies, or are otherwise indicated as having been involved in situations that call into question their character or regard for the law may not become members of the Momence Fire Protection District.

Drug Screening

Prospective members of the Momence Fire Protection District must also submit to a pre-employment drug screening, to be conducted at an offsite facility by medical personnel. Members of the Momence Fire Protection District are not permitted to use illicit drugs, and any violation of these terms is cause for termination.

Medical Examination

Due to the physical nature of the position, individuals interested in becoming volunteer firefighters for the Momence Fire Protection District must partake in a physical examination and strength test, both of which are conducted by a third-party medical provider. In order to fill the role of volunteer firefighter, both the physical examination and strength test must be passed and confirmed in writing to the Momence Fire Protection District.

Standard Operating Guidelines

Members of the Momence Fire Protection District must agree to and sign a packet of Standard Operating Guidelines, which cover a wide range of information and requirements for employment. Prospective members are expected to be people of high moral standing who will represent the Momence Fire Protection District in a positive light at all times.

Participation Levels

The Momence Fire Protection District mandates that all volunteer firefighters maintain a minimum of 36 training hours annually, as well as an emergent response rate of 20 percent.
